Common Questions Regarding Travel Signature

Expand all | Collapse all

1: WHEN AND WHERE CAN I REQUEST FOR A TRAVEL SIGNATURE?
A:You can visit the International Center, located at G302 Student Center, anytime during normal business hours, Monday through Friday from 8 am to 5pm.
The International Center is closed on Saturdays and Sundays and during University holidays.

2: WHY IS THE INTERNATIONAL CENTER MAKING THIS CHANGE?
A: The International Center needs to make this change to allow time to verify your status before signing your I-20 or DS-2019 as required by United States government. To verify your status, we are required to review your visa status; your SEVIS record; your enrollment, or employment before giving you a travel signature. In some cases data must also be updated in the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS). The new process gives you time to resolve any issues that may prevent us from signing your document.
The new process gives you more time to request a travel signature instead of being restricted to scheduled travel sessions. Finally, there will be no more waiting in long lines during busy travel times.

3: DO I STILL NEED TO COME IN ON TUESDAY OR TUESDAYS BETWEEN 2 PM – 4PM TO REQUEST MY TRAVEL FORM?
A:No. The new process accommodates your schedule. You can come to the International Center anytime during the International Center business hours.

4: CAN MY FRIEND DROP OFF OR PICK UP MY I-20 OR DS-2019 FOR ME?
A: Yes. Your friend can drop off or pick up for you. You must give your friend written permission. The permission must include your friend’s name. Your friend must also have their photo ID with them.

5: WHY WON’T WE GET THE SIGNATURE ON THE SAME DAY?
A: The new process allows the International Center staff time to verify your status. It also give you enough time to resolve issues regarding your status before leaving on your trip. This process might require you to do a little planning ahead of time; however, it will ensure that the signature on your document was accurately provided.

6: DOES NEW PROCESS EFFECT THE ONE-YEAR VALIDITY OF THE SIGNATURE?
A: The signature on your visa document is valid for one year if you are an enrolled F-1 or J-1 student, or 6 months if you are in F-1 OPT status.
Scholars in J-1 visa, your signature is valid for one year. However, you do need to submit a Travel Form each time you travel outside the U.S. (even if you do not need a signature).

7: DO I NEED TO MAKE AN APPOINTMENT WITH THE INTERNATIONAL CENTER TO SUBMIT MY TRAVEL FORM?
A: No. You do not need to make an appointment. You will be able to turn in your Travel Form and I-20 or DS-2019 during International Center business hours.

8: I HAVE A FAMILY EMERGENCY AND MUST LEAVE THE U.S. IMMEDIATELY?
A: Please contact the International Center and we will work with you regarding your emergency.

9: WHAT IF I HAVE AN ACADEMIC OR FINANCIAL HOLD ON MY STUDENT RECORD, CAN THE INTERNATIONAL CENTER STILL SIGN THE I-20 OR DS2019?
A: You must have the hold removed from your record before requesting a travel signature.

10: I WASN'T AWARE OF THE PROCESS CHANGE; AND I HAVE TO LEAVE IN THE NEXT 2 OR 3 DAYS, WHAT CAN I DO?
A: Please come to the International Center with your Travel Form and I-20 or DS-2019. We may need to mail the signed I-20 or DS-2019 to you.

11: WILL THE INTERNATIONAL CENTER NOTIFY ME ONCE MY I-20 IS READY?
A: You will need to return one week later to pick up your document. The International Center is not able to e-mail you to remind you to pick up your form.

12: DO I HAVE TO SUBMIT IN PERSON? CAN I SUBMIT ONLINE OR E-MAIL?
A: You must submit in person because the original visa document I-20/DS-2019 must be signed. You can mail the Travel Form and I-20 or DS-2019 to the International Center and we can mail the signed I-20 or DS-2019 back to you.

13: I AM CURRENTLY ON OPT AND NO LONGER LIVE IN IRVINE—HOW SHOULD I REQUEST A NEW TRAVEL SIGNATURE?
A: If you are not able to come to the International Center, you may mail the Travel Form and your original I-20 to the International Center. We will sign the I-20 and mail it to you.

14: I WILL NEED MY SIGNED FORM TO BE MAILED TO ME. WHAT DO I NEED TO DO?
A: To make arrangement for mailing you will need to review mailing information available on the International Center website http://www.ic.uci.edu/Students/New/Mailing%20Information.php".
