Banking in the U.S.
There are several banking options located near or at UCI. Below is some information to help you manage your money during your stay in the U.S. Most banks in the U.S. will have the option to transfer funds from your home country to the U.S.
It is common to use credit cards and checks in the U.S. If you plan to open a U.S. bank account once you arrive, it is best to open an account with a bank or credit union so that you are able to access cash if needed.
Most banks are open Monday-Friday, and some banks open for a short period on Saturdays. Most accounts that are opened with a U.S. bank account come with an ATM "Automatic Teller Machine" card so that you are able to visit an ATM machine and access cash in your account. We do not recommend carrying large amounts of cash with you for your safety.
There are two main types of bank accounts: checking accounts, which allows for easy access to cash and the ability to write checks, and savings accounts, which offer a place to keep money and earn interest.
