If you have experienced academic difficulties during your studies at UCI, below is important information to review and steps you can take in regards to your immigration status in the U.S. If you have additional questions, you are encouraged to email internationalcenter@uci.edu and make an appointment with a student advisor to discuss your questions/concerns.
Academic Probation
During your first quarter of academic probation, you are strongly encouraged to meet with an IC student advisor to discuss and establish a back-up plan to maintain your immigration status if you are not able to successfully fulfill the requirements of your academic contract.
Academic Dismissal
If you are academically disqualified from UCI, your academic department will inform the International Center of the change to your student status, and you may lose your F-1/J-1 student status. To maintain status, students who may be dismissed must work with the International Center to identify a new school to transfer their SEVIS record before the dismissal date. The transfer of your SEVIS record will require you to work with your new school to get a new visa document (I-20/DS-2019). Students who are outside the U.S. at the time of dismissal cannot re-enter the U.S. with the UCI I-20 or DS-2019.
Suspension
During your suspension period, you may choose to depart the U.S. for the length of your suspension. The International Center will be notified of your suspension and your immigration record will be terminated and would no longer be active. If you depart from the U.S., you will need to request a new I-20 to return for your studies at UCI, see ‘Returning Student’ information to request a new I-20. If you would like to continue your studies during the term of your suspension and remain in the U.S. as an F-1 student, you may transfer your immigration record BEFORE your suspension period begins. See ‘Transferring to Another U.S. School’ to understand the requirements for this option.
