I want to come to UCI as a J-1 researcher, how do I apply?

You must contact the UCI Host Department you are interested in visiting. The sponsoring department will submit a J-1 document request to the International Center. Upon approval from the Department of Homeland Security, the DS-2019 document will be processed and mailed to you at your preferred mailing address. You will receive further instructions on the J-1 visa process and UCI J-1 program information.

After my arrival at UCI, how soon must I check-in at the IC?

It is mandatory that you check in with International Center as soon as possible after your arrival, but no later than 30 days after the start date listed on your DS-2019. If you fail to report to our office within the 30-day time period, your DS-2019 form will be voided automatically by the US Homeland Security Department making your J-1 SEVIS record status “invalid”.

How can I find housing?

The UCI International Center does not provide housing assistance, but Irvine Campus Housing Authority can provide you with housing options. Eligibility for university housing is dependent on your UCI appointment title. Please contact your UCI host academic department for more information.

My spouse and children do not plan to come with me to the U.S. Can they join me later?

Your spouse and children can join you on J-2 visa status at any time during your stay in the U.S. You do not need to request a DS-2019 document at the same time you are getting one. They can request a DS-2019 document to apply for the J-2 visa when they are ready to visit you.

How do I make an appointment?

Please send an email to internationalscholar@uci.edu to request an appointment with an International Scholar Advisor.

What services need an appointment?

Appointments with an International Scholar Advisor are required for the following: Any detailed questions regarding your visa status, home residency requirement, change of status or other out-of-the-ordinary requests.

What services do NOT need an appointment?

J-1 documents and forms can be submitted to internationalscholar@uci.edu for the following: travel validation, J-2 dependent visa document, or off-campus scholar employment. Requests for a DS-2019 (new program or extension) must be submitted by your UCI host department to the International Center on your behalf.

Can I buy health insurance from a carrier in my country?

As long as the coverage meets J-1 visa regulations. Coverage requirements are listed at UCI’s affiliated insurance agency website: https://clients.garnett-powers.com/vs/uci/. Through the waiver process, Gallagher Benefit Services will review your purchased plan to determine if it meets the J-1 visa regulations.

How can I apply for a social security number?

After you’ve arrived at UCI, completed the new J-1 scholar IC check-in process, and your J-1 SEVIS record is validated to “active” status, you can then apply for a social security number. Please visit https://ic.uci.edu/resources-2/ssn/ for more information on the SSN process and instructions to apply.
