J-1 Program Completion
Upon completion of your UCI J-1 program, you will need to complete the Scholar Check-Out Form and submit it to internationalscholar@uci.edu at least 10 days prior to your departure from UCI.
J-1 Exchange Visitors are allowed an additional 30-day grace period after their DS-2019 document expires to prepare for their departure from the U.S.
During this grace period, employment or study is not allowed. Upon departure of the U.S. within these 30 days, the J Visa status automatically expires and you will not be able to re-enter the country to reclaim the rest of your grace period time.
Transfer-Out: Transferring J-1 Program to Another J-1 Sponsoring Institution
If you are transferring your J-1 program from UCI to another J-1 sponsoring institution in the U.S., you will need to complete and submit the following documents to internationalscholar@uci.edu.
- Transfer Out Request Form
- The transfer out request form must be completed by you, your current UCI host department and your new J-1 sponsoring institution (ARO/RO, International Office)
- Scholar Check-Out Form
Please note should not be a gap in between your J-1 program when transferring to another J-1 sponsoring institution. U.S. Department of State expects all J-1 scholar programs are continuous, even when moving to a new institution. For example, if your last date of UCI employment will be October 31st, you should begin your J-1 program at the new institution on November 1st. You will want to coordinate with your UCI host department and new J-1 sponsoring institution to determine these dates.
The UCI International Center will need these forms completed in order to process your request and coordinate your SEVIS record transfer with the new institution. We recommend starting the transfer-out process at least 30 days before your last date of UCI employment.
Please contact the International Center at internationalscholar@uci.edu if you have additional questions.
